CT State Northwestern Gallery Presents Artist Daniel Baxter: Of Maps and Music

October 22, 2025

Winsted, CT – CT State Northwestern’s Gallery at Founders Hall will present artist Daniel Baxter’s Of Maps and Music November 3 through December 15. An artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, November 18, 4 to 6 p.m. Both the gallery and reception are free and open to the public.

Baxter has worked for decades as an award-winning illustrator, with work appearing in hundreds of publications including The New York Times and National Public Radio’s Music Series. In recent years he has turned toward creating more personal work using pre-existing printed materials such as maps, sheet music, and old book pages as a ground for his illustrations.

In his artist statement, Baxter states he is “fascinated by two of the earliest forms of human abstract thought, map-making and picture-making.” He also states his interest lies in “what can be conveyed when maps and pictures are intermingled in one image.”

“In my process, I find preexisting maps, and meditate on what they represent to me, in both a macro and micro sense. In treating these cartographic images as canvases they become a springboard for exploring a variety of themes: Identity, national and local pride, history, nature, politics, and perhaps most importantly, environmental issues.”

Baxter is a graduate of the Parsons School of Design and currently lives in the Hudson Valley in New York.

CT State Northwestern is committed to fostering a vibrant arts community by providing a space for artists to showcase their work and engage with the public. The Gallery, located on the first floor of Founders Hall, 4 Park Place, is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and hosts a rotating schedule of exhibitions featuring contemporary artists working in a variety of media.
